Title: Standing Strong.
Size: 24cm by 36cm Media: Mixed Media Date: February, 2016 Exhibition Text. The title of this piece is "Standing Strong" because I wanted to represent the meaning of the tree along with the wrenches. I used the artist Andy Goldsworthy because of the way he incorporates natural resources to create organic structures in nature. I used wrenches along with moss and Japanese flowers to represent the tree and the nature around it, while also including some Japanese culture with the addition of the Japanese cherry blossoms on the boarder. |
Process and outcome.INSPIRATION. I chose to focus on Japanese culture because traditional Japanese culture has many roots in traditional Chinese culture, however Japanese culture, even historically differed from Chinese culture. In Japan the Japanese cherry blossoms have a great meaning to them. The meaning of the cherry blossoms varies depending on where you are in Japan. The story of the cherry blossom has many endings to it, including they were planted to create a warm place to have parties and show the change in the seasons.
In comparison to my work, I chose to include these cherry blossoms to tell my own story of creating this tree made of wrenches and what it means to me and my family. I also wanted to include the cherry blossoms because it made the piece complete and showed the culture behind my idea. |
In the process of creating my industrial vs. organic project, I had an amazing outcome of each step throughout the process. I don't have many sketches of my design because I wasn't sure on what the exact creation and construction of the project.
The beginning of the process, I had to buy an large amount of wrenches and a large piece of 2 x 4 7/16 tack board which was from home depot. Along with the board and wrenches, I also bought green spray paint and a gloss coat to create the background behind the wrenches. I used the color green on the background to represent mother nature and to represent the emotion of calmness and serenity. I also used the moss and Japanese cherry blossoms to represent the season of spring, because in Chinese culture the Japanese cherry blossom is a symbolic flower of spring. In the process, the beginning was the most challenging part because lining up the wrenches close enough so I could drill one hole to connect the two wrenches together. After everything was lined up and drill out, I was able to re-arrange the smaller wrenches so it would look like the tree was just planted somewhere important. Finally I was able to take the board and wrenches to my father's workshop to spray paint and then add nuts and bolts to hold the wrenches in place. |
