Outcome. The process to creating this painting was easy in my opinion. Since I had worked with this medium before I had an understanding of how to blend and mix colors and I was able to make layers that were thicker or thinner as well as add texture to the piece. I decided to paint this project because It would be easier to show the culture and meaning behind japanese artwork.
I got this idea after the passing of my godmother. My godmother came from a strong catholic culture that had focused on japanese culture as well. The women around her showed her the beauty of the Japanese Cherry Blossom and also how to write in Japanese. After the exposure of the japanese culture she began to draw and keep cherry blossoms around her house along with inspirational japanese symbols that made her feel close to the japanese people. With this peice I decided to add artificial flowers to the painting to symbolize the connection to my personal life. Something I wish I would have looked more into would be how to incorporate more texture like using layers and layers of paint into the tree trunk instead of just using one layer. Some of the challenges I endured was my lines for the detail in the tree and branches, they were to light which left little imperfections when the piece was finished. EXPERIMENTATION: I decided to work with water-color paints mainly because they were easier to mix and create light coats to use bright colors and show detail. I also used smaller paint brushes to create the detail and highlights within the tree. |
Research & Inspiration. The cherry blossom (or sakura) sweeps along the inner city of Japan each year, beginning with Okinawa in the far south in February and working its way along Japan to northern Hokkaido in May. In ancient Japan, cherry blossom had great importance because it announced the rice-planting season and was used to divine the year's harvest. Tawaraya Sōtatsu, a Japanese artist of the Tokugawa period (1603–1867) who combined the traditional themes of the indigenous school of Japanese narrative scroll painting, known as Yamato-e, with the bold, decorative designs of the great screen painters of the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1574–1600.

Reflection.Overall I enjoyed doing this piece because I was able to work with a medium that isn't my favorite but I was able to use it to my best ability and it was also interesting to do something that I could mix different mediums with. One thing I would do different next time would be the choice of technique used to paint the image because after reviewing the piece I can see some spots that needed more paint and either have a darker or lighter spot. I would also use different designs to show the cherry blossom flower and the detail within the flower. The message behind my piece I believe catches the viewers attention while in general this piece was very successful, it is one of my favorite pieces and I am satisfied with the outcome.
