Title: Racing Time
Size:17.7 cm x 6.3 cm per car. Medium: Metal Matchbox Cars. Date: April, 2016 Exhibition Text. I chose to do a Assemblage/ Found Object Sculpture because I wanted to use an object that was ready made but has a different purpose. I decided to use matchbox cars to represent the cycle of life in the view of a young child. In each photo I took, I eliminated two cars to represent the lost memories of life that disappear as you become older. |
Process and outcome. |
This project was inspired by Joseph Cornell and how he used a collection of items to represent daily items that could be useful for art purposes. As mentioned before in the exhibition text I used matchbox cars to represent time in life from when you are little until you're the age where toys become little trinkets that sit on your shelf and collect dust. In Joseph Cornell's pieces of art I realized he used common objects like glasses and dolls. With each picture I tried to show spots where kids would play with these cars, for example in the living room on the fireplace or in the grass out in the front yard. Along with changing the location of each picture I also changed the design of the matchbox cars to represent the change in imagination and opinions. With the change I also took away two cars away to represent the changes you experience as you grow up. My planning sketches were reflected upon objects I see everyday and have frequently by used by other artist in their sculptures. I started with the basic designs like straight lines and shapes like circles and squares. I also wanted to be creativity with designs so with the simple designs I added curves and angles that gave the picture definition. I had some problems with the lighting in the photo's, especially in darker rooms like the living room and basement. I also believe that the design on each photo affected the way the light reflected upon it especially like being outside or being in an empty hall way. The most challenging part of setting everything up would be getting the matchbox cars to stay in place while I take the photo's at different angles. |
