Title: HELP.
Medium: Make-up utensils on Canvas Size: 30.48 cm X 60.96 cm Date: November, 2016. Exhibition Text. The title of this piece is "HELP" because I wanted to express the theme of isolation and depression. I decided to write out the word help in make-up utensils to represent todays society which demonstrates the feeling of isolation and depression of not fitting in. |
Research & Inspiration When researching on the topic of mix media artist I begin to look into Modernist artist. Since my piece is based off of todays society I wanted to focus more on modernism and also the mix media artist that best represents my piece.
Oscar Agustín Alejandro Schulz Solari (1887- 1963) was an Argentinian modernist artist. His painting were colorful, full of symbols, and a new world to discover. He tried to create a language but in his own words “I am a master of a writing no one reads yet”. He was very successful with his artwork and his creation of the his language.

Process Outcomes. With the creation of this process, I had a hard time on designing the way the letters would look and how big I wanted them to be by only using the make-up pieces. Once I decided to do just a set up, I started creating the in word. I wasn't sure on how to have the canvas laying, whether It was horizontally or vertically. This piece had a particular challenge for me due to the fact I used a different medium than I'm use to doing for an art class. Working with anytime of mix media is a challenge but it increases your artistic skills.
I got this idea while I shopping with my mother and she was telling me all about her school years. My mother had struggled with her self-appearance during those years and she went to make-up to improve the way she felted about herself. In todays society, many women and some young girls believe they are pretty only with make-up on but in reality everyone is beautiful inside and out. I chose to write the word "Help" because I believe people who wear make-up are sending a signal that they wanted to be loved the way they are and that they shouldn't be shamed for not looking like a model. I also struggle with my self-appearance but I refuse to use make-up to cover my imperfection. This relates back to the feeling of isolation and depression because when you or someone else mentions your imperfections you become self-conscious and you hide behind anything to drive the attention away from you. When someone does that, sometimes you can become depressed and just want to be alone because you are scared of being made fun of. EXPERIMENTATION: When I was thinking of the idea within my head, I was having a hard time deciding on what kind of materials I was going to use and what they were gonna represent. In the beginning I was going to use pencils and pens to spell the word but I didn't have a true meaning behind why I chose those materials. I was also going to write the word out with pieces of clothing to represent the school dress code discussion but the fabric was to hard to work with. |
Reflection
Overall I enjoyed doing this piece because I was able to work with my a different kind of medium and it was also interesting to do something that has many different potentials. One thing I would do different next time would be the choice of technique used to put the word together because after looking at it I can see some spots that are off-centered or not portioned correctly. I would also use a different colored background to show the meaning of the word help. In general this piece was very successful and I'm happy with the way it turned out.
